30.03.2010 - Cultural and coaching exchange helps Guyana rugby progression
In 2005 Dave Morris , head of rugby coach development, established the coaching and cultural exchange to the West Indies as part of the BOOST rugby coach development project. In that first year exchanges were established with Guyana and Jamaica, every year subsequently Loughborough has sent student coaches to Guyana for a period of 4-5 weeks to help develop rugby in the region. Guyana men and women won their respective competitions which meant Guyana men qualified for the IRB Las Vegas Sevens and the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The photo show’s BOOST Charitable Trust founder Robert Houston with the Guyana national coaches who have all been to Loughborough University on the exchange. From Left to right: Robert Houston, Larry Adonis, Sherlock Solomon, Alton Aggard and Clinton Clarke.
At the IRB Las Vegas Sevens Guyana produced a brilliant display against the French, going ahead 12-5 before finally being pegged back to draw 12-12. The scale of their achievement is fully recognised when you compare the official IRB stats. Guyana has just 3 clubs with a total playing population across all ages of 1,307. France have 1734 clubs with a total playing population of 273,084.
Well done Guyana!
