Activities // Community Programme

The corner stone of the boost coach academy is the North and South Charnwood community coaching programme, involving 30-40 students delivering between 3 and 8 coaching sessions per day, 7 days a week at schools, community colleges, further education colleges, Universities and clubs.

Each school gets a minimum of 1 term of coaching and each period of coaching culminates in a festival held at either the University or a local rugby club, both easing and encouraging the transition of players from school rugby to club rugby. Coaching takes place during curriculum time, lunchtime clubs and after school clubs.

Our aims

It is the aim of the Academy that each hour delivered to the community results in a positive experience far beyond that coaching session. Therefore, time is dedicated to the personal development of participants in addition to sporting development, thus remaining true to the Loughborough mantra ‘Developing People, Developing Sport’.

We also ensure that all schools that we work with sign a link agreement with their local club to provide a pathway for young people into club sport. We aim to provide the gifted and talented with opportunities to progress to county and representative honours, ensuring they reach their potential.

Special Rewards

To Build on Overlooked Sporting Talent, we select the most talented young people from each of our local festivals to play in an invitational team to play at special events such as the Real Varsity Match (played annually between Loughborough and Bath) and Loughborough Students vs England under 20’s (a match won by Loughborough in 2009!). Both girls and boys get to experience a world class facility, and what its like to play at a major event, giving healthy role models and targets to aim for as they develop through their school life.

Key Stage 4 Scholarships

Focusing on the Key Stage 4 group is also a key aspect of the programme, particularly encouraging young people to become leaders and coaches. In support of this the Boost Coach Academy selects boys and girls from local schools and funds them to complete their RFU level 1 coaching award. In return for this investment the students shadow Boost coaches in their own school in addition to local schools and help out at festivals and events.

It is hoped that with further support this programme can be increased to allow more young people to get involved in sports coaching.
